Hope is an Endless Song

I wished the music, the songs, and the dancing could go on forever.

I closed my eyes and breathed it in, then tucked it into my heart and saved it for later.

The sounds, the sights, the feelings. Sometimes I love things too much and sometimes that’s ok.

I love live music, theater, and art in general. It feeds my soul and gives me hope, reminds me of beauty and I need that, we all need that.

I store these beautiful experiences in my mind carefully, so I can bring them out later, and feel all the things I felt then.

When I am lonely, or when I am sad, I’ll bring out the music, the songs, and the dancing, and my fears will melt away.

Happy is a gospel song plucked out on a dobro in a room full of dancing people.

Happy is the freedom to dance and sing, even when there is bleakness in the world – for somehow even though there is sorrow there are still songs.

I’m reminded of when I visited homeless church a few weeks ago, and everyone danced in the aisles, uninhibited for a moment.

I held a baby boy, three precious months old, and swayed to the music till he fell asleep. That made my heart so full. That was happy, that was joy even in the midst of suffering.

Homeless church was full of people choosing joy in the middle of chaos, choosing joy even when their lives have been turned upside down. Those are my people.

Uninhibited joy and living life fully are hard, and for me anxiety provides a constant obstacle. My life often consists of patiently trying to untie the knots in my stomach as I face one anxiety after another.

I may be brave with a pen, but I’m still tenderly learning how to be more brave with my life, how to choose joy and live joy.

I was worrying about the future and the unknowns of life, when God told me “Don’t focus on the problems, focus on the living, and the rest will come together.”

Focus on the living, on the fully experiencing each moment, and the rest will fall into place.
Focus on the joy, be grateful for what you have, and suddenly the bad things become less important.

Somehow, bad things have a way of losing their power over us when we stop dwelling on them and choose to focus on the good instead.

Remember the music, the songs, and the dancing, and live life with a song in your heart.

There’s a word for that – living life with a song in your heart. I think the word is hope.

“Hope” is the thing with feathers –
That perches in the soul –
And sings the tune without the words –
And never stops – at all”
-Emily Dickinson

Hope is a bird perched in every soul, singing an endless song.

Live in hope, my friend.

But those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him]
Will gain new strength and renew their power;
They will lift up their wings [and rise up close to God] like eagles [rising toward the sun];
They will run and not become weary,
They will walk and not grow tired.

Isaiah 40:31, Amplified Bible
